The Executive Office on Aging coordinates services for older adults across all the islands as Hawaii's designated State Unit on Aging under the federal Older Americans Act. Since 2020, we've worked alongside their team to build the digital infrastructure that helps kupuna, caregivers, and families find the right programs, get plain-language answers, and reach trained counselors without cost or pressure.
That work spans three program websites, Hawaii SHIP, SMP Hawaii, and the LTC Ombudsman, each with a custom volunteer portal that gives program volunteers the resources and tools they need to do their work. We also built KupunaReady, a disaster preparedness resource tailored specifically to older adults in Hawaii. The flagship project is KupunaHub, a custom web application that lets anyone describe their situation in their own words and get matched to the most relevant local and national resources, with the option to request a free counselor callback in their preferred language. Behind the scenes, KupunaHub connects two long-running state programs and uses an AI assistant to route questions accurately while keeping personal information private.
Every site we've built for EOA is custom, accessible to WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards, and designed around the people who need it most, many of whom are navigating Medicare, insurance, caregiving, or fraud concerns for the first time. It's work we take seriously, and we're proud to support the agency doing it.
